EDF and Volkswagen partner on smart charging
**EDF Group and Volkswagen Group France Sign Partnership to Develop Electric Mobility Projects, Including Smart Charging**
EDF Group and Volkswagen Group France have signed a partnership to jointly develop several projects related to electric mobility, with a specific focus on smart charging.
The partnership agreement between EDF Group and Volkswagen Group France aims to accelerate the transition to electric mobility. It is centered on the implementation of three key projects in mainland France, with a special emphasis on the development of smart charging technologies.
The first project involves the deployment of photovoltaic self-consumption solutions at Volkswagen Group France dealership sites, managed by EDF ENR, a subsidiary of EDF Group. The second project focuses on cooperation for the testing and deployment of bidirectional smart charging services as part of the EU-funded EVVE project, led by EDF Group. Finally, the third initiative has resulted in the co-development of the "Sowee smart charge" offer by Volkswagen Group France and SOWEE, a subsidiary of EDF Group. This offer allows end-users to manage the charging of their vehicles via a mobile application, encouraging charging when electricity is both cheapest and least carbon-intensive. Vehicles are charged when electricity demand is at its lowest, typically aligned with peak renewable energy production.
### **Sowee Smart Charge: A Home Charging Solution**
The Sowee smart charge solution is designed for individual homeowners who own a Volkswagen electric vehicle and have a home charging setup (plug or charging station).
With this offer, customers benefit from a Sowee electricity supply contract that features a fixed (excluding tax) price for two years and access to various services for managing consumption. For example, users can enter their departure time and desired charge level into the Sowee smart charge app. Using algorithms, the app automatically adjusts the vehicle's charging schedule based on electricity price signals, available energy on the grid, and off-peak hours (if this option is included in their electricity contract).
Additionally, the Sowee smart charge solution enables customers to earn up to **1,000 free kilometers per year** through:
- Savings on electricity bills.
- Rewards for every kWh charged smartly via the app, which accumulate in a dedicated fund. The balance can be used to partially pay electricity bills.
This partnership demonstrates EDF and Volkswagen Group France's commitment to fostering sustainable and cost-effective electric mobility.
